Starting the process of hiring a temporary foreign worker at the earliest possible time is crucial as it can take a considerable amount of time. Any mistakes or incomplete information during the application stages may result in further delays and have adverse effects on your business. It is therefore imperative to seek the assistance of a licensed immigration consultant who can guide you through the process and prevent any potential obstacles.

How do I hire a temporary foreign worker?

There are 3 basic steps to hire a temporary foreign worker:

  • Get a labour market impact assessment ("LMIA") or submit an offer of employment

  • Have the worker apply for a work permit

  • Tell the worker what to expect from their application

How to get an LMIA

You’ll need an LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

The LMIA application process depends on the type of program you’re hiring through.

Find out how to apply for an LMIA to hire:

  • high-wage workers

  • low-wage workers

  • workers through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program
